 Car Insurance Paperwork and Rates

When you purchase your car insurance you will be required to provide the following types of documentation for the process to proceed smoothly. These include:

1. A valid driver’s license.
If you have a suspended driver’s license you won’t be able to renew your car insurance.

2. Vehicle registration.

3. Car insurance renewal notice. If you are renewing your car insurance be sure to bring the notice along with you so that your current information is available for the insurance agent.

4. AirCare certificate. If you were required to take your car to an air testing facility you will have to provide the paperwork to show that your car passed the inspection.

5. Decide ahead of time if you want optional insurance. Save time by knowing in advance if you will be purchasing any optional car insurance.

After you have purchased your car insurance you will be given a document that is called the Owner’s Certificate of Insurance. This document should be photocopied, signed, and carried in your car at all times in the event of an accident, theft, or vandalism.

Car Insurance Rate Classes: One of the many things that will affect the cost of your car insurance premiums is the rate class. A rate class is defined as what you use your vehicle for such as (a) business, (b) driving to work or school, or (c) driving for pleasure only.

There are more than 150 rate classes. The more common rate classes are:

Pleasure use only.

Delivery. Using a vehicle for the purpose of a business delivery.

Business. Driving to and from work.

Paid damages. Any damages that are the result of theft, natural disaster, or vandalism will be fully or partly covered by some types of car insurance.

Non-commercial. For non-commercial use only.

The more that you drive your vehicle the more chance there is of you being in an accident. Therefore rate classes determine just how much driving you will be doing. The less driving that you do, the lower your car insurance premium will be.

Make sure that you don’t insure your vehicle under the wrong rate class. If you do register in the wrong rate class, and you are in an accident, you could be denied any claim that you make. You may also be held liable if there is any damage to another vehicle. Have your car insurance agent explain the differences between rates and help you make the right choice for your insurance premium
